Ictus in a young adult with patent foramen ovale: Case report and literature review

Abstract:

The diagnostic approach in a young patient with a stroke is very complex due to the numerous causes that might be involved. In the majority of the series, unusual etiologies are described, with the cardioembolic ones amongst the most frequents. During the last years, the role of auricular septum diseases, especially the permeable oval foramen, has been studied in the cerebral ischemia of young patients. The case of a 33 years old patient with sudden focal neurological signs is reported. Its etiological origin was at the cardiac level.
