Identificación de Enterococcus faecalis en cepillos dentales y eva-luación in vitro de su grado de susceptibilidad frente a hipo-clorito de sodio y gluconato de clorhexidina

Abstract:

A wide variety of microorganisms could remain in toothbrushes after being used. These microorganisms are able to last in a toothbrush for one day and usually even for a week after their usage. These contaminated toothbrushes would cause oral and systemic diseases such as sepsis, gastrointestinal diseases, cardiovascular, respiratory and even kidney problems. The main aim of this study is to isolate this called Enterococcus faecalis in toothbrushes; and assess the level of susceptibility to Sodium Hypochlorite and Chlorhexidine Gluconate within a range of different levels of concentration; this actually is a type of analytical experimental and transversal research. Seventy (70) toothbrushes were used as a sample for this study that in fact, belonged to people of the "REMAR” Foundation in the current period (2016). The final result obtained from this sample (70 brushes) was the fact that the incidence of Enterococcus faecalis was positive in 5 toothbrushes (7 percent) of all the samples evaluated. The data obtained in this study allow us to know that the Chlorhexidine Gluconate in a 2 percent rate and the Sodium Hypochlorite in a 5 percent rate are the specific and accurate solutions against the species called Enterococcus faecalis. The positive results obtained in this research can be directly related to the patients neglect when disinfecting their toothbrushes, as well as the place where they are used to laying them that, as a matter of fact, is commonly the bathroom which provides a suitable environment for this microorganism development.
