Identification of sustainable food production models that contribute to food sovereignty in the canton of Pillaro

Abstract:

The need for healthy and nutritious food production that improves food sovereignty has been a concern of many governments. The current work was carried out with the purpose of identifying sustainable food production models that contribute to food sovereignty (FS) in the canton of Pillaro. In addition, FS indicators were evaluated to understand the inputs of the identified models. The indicators consider five parameters: access to resources, production models, processing and marketing, food consumption, right to food and agricultural policies. For this purpose, a survey was conducted to investigate agroecological parameters such as type of production (agricultural and livestock), land size (approximate area per farmer), quantity produced (volume of production per item), and the diversification of crops (number of crops used per plot of land). Through this method, an extensive list of agricultural species cultivated by the population was generated. The analysis identified three agri-food models of sustainable production based on crop diversification, namely models of high, medium, and low diversification. These results demonstrate the influence of agri-food models on the food sovereignty of the canton of Pillaro and show that crop diversification improves the availability of a variety of foods provided by family and peasant farming practices.
