Impact of the non-manageable renewable generation in the technical and economic operation of a transmission grid. Application in a specific study case

Abstract:

The energy policy in Argentina is gradually migrating towards the use of renewable energy. In this work, the technical and economic impact of photovoltaic and wind parks insertion in the Interconnected Provincial System of La Rioja (Argentina) is studied. The requirements of thermal generation and the not-supplied energy during the not-admissible network operation are estimated thorough power flows simulations. On the other hand, the work analyzes i) the effect of renewable generation plants in the projected electrical demand and ii) the reduction of manageable thermal generation. Results show that the power contribution of renewable generation is highly beneficial in the normal network operation. The work shows important reductions in the required manageable generation and considerable decreases in the amount of not-supplied energy, which also imply significant economic savings.
