Abstract:

Background: Following the recent changes to the diagnostic category for addictive disorders in DSM-5, and the pending inclusion of gaming and gambling disorders in the ICD-11, there is an urgent need to clarify what constitutes behavioral addiction to avoid pathologizing normal behavior. Methods: A critical analysis of available literature was conducted, and a debate took place with peers through the Open Science Framework (https://osf. io/q2vva/wiki/home/). Results: An expanding body of research has classified engagement in a wide range of common behaviors and leisure activities as behavioral addictions, resulting in pathologizing of non-clinically relevant behaviors.
