7: Nutrigenomics and its perspective in nutrition

Abstract:

This chapter explores the use of nutrigenomics to study the role of nutrients on pig and poultry physiology and growth. ‘Omics’ techniques are important for uncovering biological pathways within and between tissues. Use of these techniques could allow for better understanding of the relationships between nutrition and physiology, enabling the enhancement of animal performance based on nutrition. This chapter first outlines the potential importance of using ‘omics’ technologies in livestock nutrition. After a brief description of high-throughput ‘omics’ techniques, the use of nutrigenomics techniques in swine and poultry production is discussed. Topics highlighted include the uses of ‘omics’ techniques to enhance the knowledge of how nutrition modulates tissue metabolism, as well as gut health and immunity.
