Abstract:

Background The experience of the climacteric is different for every woman, and among women from different cultures or backgrounds. The climacteric is not the end of life, but the beginning of a stage which comprises almost one-third of female life. A woman’s normal period is characterized by menstrual irregularity. This irregularity provokes alterations in the normal cyclic operation of the ovary in a slowly and progressively way until it reaches the cessation of its function. Moreover, the climacteric produces hot flashes, feelings of intense warmth, which is most pronounced in the upper part of the body. These hot flashes are followed by diaphoresis that increases at night.
