Increased spontaneous cytotoxicity of mononuclear cells from peripheral blood of patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the active stage
Abstract:
Peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with rheumatoid arthritis in clinically active phase mediate in vitro a direct cytotoxic activity which is higher than that shown in normal subjects (p<0.01). This 'spontaneous' cellular cytotoxicity is higher than that evidenced by lymphocytes from the synovial fluid of the same patients, shows no apparent relationship to antibody-mediated cytotoxicity and decrease significantly (p< 0.05) after elimination of phagocytic cells. These data tend to support the possible existence of activated macrophages in the active forms of rheumatoid arthritis.
