Indicators of the impact of international scientific cooperation in a University Research Center

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to systematize the experiences of the Center for Corrosion Studies (CEC) at the University of Zulia (LUZ) in the sphere of international scientific and technological cooperation, and to explore the impact indicators of this cooperation, both tangible and intangible, related to institutional strengthening and regional cooperation. The methodology employed was exploratory and descriptive, and conceived as historial retrospection in relation to the Center. It was undertaken in two phases. The first phase consisted of a review of documents related to research activities and their international nature. The objectives of this phase were 1) explore the developmental path of CEC in the area of international cooperation. 2) systematise the experiences, and 3) determine the impact indicators. The second phase of the study, using a survey mode, focused on a semi-structured interview with the Center Director and researchers, with the same objectives as in the first phase. The principal conclusions refer to the high level of personel specialization, high potential levels for participating in international cooperation in the areas of corrosion and research and development, and finally, the importance given by researchers to intagible indicators such as the aggregate value of cooperation.
