Indicators of urban environmental sustainability in Ecuador: a case study of the PasajeCanton, Ecuador
Abstract:
Urban areas in developing countries show accelerated and disorderly growth, affecting natural resources and the social fabric of communities. The objective of the research was to determine the indicators of urban environmental sustainability (ISAU) of the canton of Pasaje, Ecuador. The study area was the urban area of Pasaje, where 65 randomized plots were implemented, where an observation form was applied with indicators on land occupation and functioning of the city, housing and habitat, urban public spaces, and green areas, among others. The information collected was analyzed through Principal Component Analysis and Decision Tree in the SPSS VS. 25 program. In Pasaje, the UAERs of green areas surface per inhabitant, a distance of communities to green areas, and heritage buildings were the most discriminating, while the Decision Tree confirmed that the population perceives greater sustainability when having a distance to green areas of less than 500 meters. The indicators of urban environmental sustainability are important for territorial planning and in the sense of pertinence of the communities of the cities, in this sense, Pasaje has low environmental sustainability by not complying with the indicators of green areas and heritage buildings.
