Influence of combined oral steroid contraceptives on the LHRH/TRH-triple stimulation of pituitary secretion

Abstract:

Seven cycling women without any hormonal therapy and nine women using combined oral steroid contraceptives were challenged with a LHRH/TRH-triple stimulation. After the first dose of LHRH/TRH, every mean LH and FSH level was significantly lower in oral contraceptive users than those found in cycling women. The PRL release after each bolus of LHRH/TRH was not altered by the use of hormonal contraception. Therefore, during combined oral steroid treatment gonadotropes responsiveness is depressed and the lactotropes responsiveness is unaltered by treatment.
