Influence of physical activities on the self-esteem in university teachers: Short-time effects


Abstract:

Introduction: Leisure time and professional skills often have an influence on the work performance in university professors, reflecting psychological aspects such as self-esteem. Physical activity is a specialty that provides through motor experience a myriad of intellectual and attitudinal potentials, and could have influences on aspects such as self-esteem. Objective: Raise self-esteem in a short time in university professors through a specialized physical activities program. Methods: 16 university professors over 50 years of age were studied, professionals from the Facultad de Salud Pública de la Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH), applying before and after implementing a program for a month (eight intervention sections) of specialized physical-recreational activities. The Rosemberg Self-esteem Scale is applied, knowing of self-esteem levels of the sample studied and influence exerted by the intervention program. Results: In the course of one month of proposal implementation, an increase of 66.09% to 75.31% of group self-esteem was obtained (evolution of self-esteem from medium level to high level), there being significant differences (p = 0.028) in posttest favor. Conclusions: The application of physical-recreational proposal did influence in a short time the self-esteem of the university professors investigated, generating satisfaction and self-confidence.
