Influence of the reproductive cycle and environmental parameters on energetic substrates in the gonads of the brown mussel perna perna l. (1758), in the caribbean sea, (Northeastern of Venezuela)

Abstract:

We evaluated the energy substrates contained in the gonads of a population of brown mussel Perna perna, located of the Caribbean Sea (Northeastern Venezuela). Specimens were collected monthly, by free diving and autonomous, February 2000-January 2001. To this end, 675 organizations were selected, taking into account sex and reproductive stage. In both sexes, but especially in females, was observed the occurrence of stages of maturity and spawning throughout the year, thus suggesting a continuous playback. As for the falls seen in the dry weight of the gonadal lobes, these corresponded to a temporary basis (April to May and November-December) with stage 4 (spawning), while in the case of biochemical components during the reproductive period there was a reduction of lipids and proteins, while the highest content of lipids and proteins were observed during the stage of sexual maturity For its part, the maximum values of chlorophyll a were observed in May and November, while the minimum was observed in August of that year. The low carbohydrate content during periods of gonad maturation (3) and high food availability suggest the immediate transformation of this metabolic reserve, probably for the maintenance of metabolism and for the reproductive processes. The observed changes in content of energy substrates show a complex interaction between food availability and reproductive processes.
