Informal Urbanization as a Notion and as Practice: Lessons from Guayaquil, Ecuador
Abstract:
In this duo lecture, Nelson Carofilis and Olga Peek will develop a critical perspective on the notion of informality, in which they explore the questions of how is ‘informality’practiced in the city? Who is included in or excluded from these practices? And how are relationships and actions established among different actors through the many different ways in which (in) formal practices materialise? The city of Guayaquil, a largely self-built city on the Ecuadorian coast, offers abundant ground to explore these questions. Based on ongoing (PhD) research projects on the city of Guayaquil, the lecture will invite participants to look beyond the limited capacity of term informality to address human settlement as an intrinsic component of cities in transformation.
