Insights about educational resources for software engineers: The perspective of Ecuadorian professionals
Abstract:
As in other disciplines, the software engineering profession demands continuous learning. One way of dealing with this demand is the use of available educational resources like books, videos, online courses, amongst others. This paper is aimed at getting insights about the training needs of software professionals and their expectations regarding educational resources. A survey was administered to 85 of these professionals working, either for a software development company or within an IT department of public or private organizations in Ecuador. Results indicate that online courses are the preferred educational resources. Also, gender and age are key demographic characteristics distinguishing the professionals’ preferences about such resources. Men are willing to devote up to 5 hours per week for training using educational resources while women, being more flexible in this regard, may spend up to 10 hours. In addition, professionals, 30 years old or younger, favor resources related to the software architecture topic while those older than 30 years prefer the agile development topic instead. We argue that the findings of the study are valuable for educators and trainers interested in better developing software engineering educational resources.
