Insulin application techneque and its relationship with lipodystrophy in patients with type I diabetes mellitus


Abstract:

Introduction and objectives: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus it is a frequent pathology in developed and developing countries; in Latin America and the Caribbean its incidence is increasing, therefore, an adequate technique and self-care avoid complications; the purpose of the research being to assess the technique of self-application of insulin and its relationship with lipodystrophy. Materials and methods: An observational, quantitative, cross-sectional cohort study was conducted in 30 patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. A directed observational record was applied, the data were processed in the SPSS version 15 programs, using statistics of frequency, percentages and incidence rate. Results: Insulin application technique is deficient since only 66.67% of the environment is before administration, 26.66% does not disinfect the area before applying the medication and does not perform the fold technique and only 63.33% counts the time after inject insulin. The incidence of lipodys-trophies is 90%, of which 70% occur in the abdomen and 10% in the arms. Conclusions: The technique of insulin application is not optimal, the incidence of lipodystrophy is very high.
