Integral geriatric evaluation of the institutionalized older adult


Abstract:

Introduction: The comprehensive geriatric assessment (EGI) is defined as a biopsychosocial assessment tool, which admits the probability of identifying the multidimensional care needs of institutionalized older adults. Objective: To determine the Comprehensive Geriatric Evaluation in the Institutionalized Elderly at the Cristo Rey Home in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. Methodology: Quantitative, transversal research; applied to 150 older adults of the Casa Hogar Cristo Rey. The instruments applied were: Gijón Social Assessment Scale, Barthel Index, Nutritional Assessment Scale (Mini Nutritional Assessment MNA), modified Tinetti Scale, modified Cognitive Assessment (MMSE). The tabulation and determination of the results was carried out with the SPSS 24 program, and these are presented in simple tables, with frequencies and percentages. Results: 38.8% belong to the age group of 85 to 99 years, single marital status 53.1%, incomplete primary schooling 47.6%, Catholic religion 91.2%. With severe functional dependence 32.7%; a high risk of falls in 55.1%, with a severely altered cognitive state 61.9%. Also with social problems in 96.6% and with risk of malnutrition in 65.3%. Conclusions: The health status of the institutionalized elderly in the Cristo Rey home is characterized by being dependent, with different degrees of alterations in the medical dimension, a high degree of mental alteration and impaired social resources.
