Integration of downdraft gasifier with fuel cell and organic rankine cycle for power generation

Abstract:

This paper presents a combined cycle for producing power in microscale. This cycle consists of three technologies of Biomass gasification (downdraft reactor using air as a reactor agent feeding with oil palm fronds as biomass fuel), solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) (using Isopentane and R245fa as working fluids). The resulting exhaust of SOFC is used in the ORC. The thermo-dynamic system is simulated using Cycle-Tempo software program. Some parameters such as current density, fuel utilization, pressure ratio, temperature ratio, are taken into account to study their actions on the performance of the overall cycle. After recovering the waste heat from SOFC through ORC under the terms of the design parameter, the summary of results proved that the efficiency is increased by 40%.
