Interference Model for macro-femtocell networks

Abstract:

Femtocells deployment benefits mobile user's experience by improving the indoor coverage area. Nevertheless, it increases the interference sources in the radio access network. Establishing a proper interference model will enable network operators to perform transmit power control effectively; quality network and effectiveness of femtocells depend on it. This paper uses propagation models of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), adapting them for uplink and downlink transmissions in the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) frequency band. Cross-tier and co-tier interference analysis are performed taking into the impact on the penetration losses due to several wall materials. The simulation scenarios include femtocells interaction among one-story houses and buildings. This allow us to determine optimized formulas to estimate the interference level and define the main interaction areas between macrocell and femtocells, as well as area where the femtocell usage is effective.
