Interrelationship between iron deficiency anemia and impaired renal function in toxemia of pregnancy

Abstract:

Increased frequency of anemia and preeclampsia was found in 48 middle class pregnant women who received placebo during gestation as compared to 88 women, under the same conditions, who received iron or iron and folic acid supplementation. Of the total 23 anemic women, preeclampsia coexisted in 10. The anemic women with preeclampsia had lower transferrin saturation than the patients who only had anemia. 80% of the anemic preeclamptic patients had albumin traces in urine prior to any other symptoms. It is suggested that the role of iron deficiency in the etiology of toxemia of pregnancy may be through impaired catabolism of catecholamines and serotonin due to monoamine oxidase inhibition. Preexisting damage of kidney and placenta may also initiate some of the alterations that lead to toxemia.
