Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This research was carried out in the Health Centers (Pumapungo, Miraflores, Tomebamba and Yanuncay) of Cuenca, from December 2010 until June 2011; we examined 115 diarrheal samples of babies less than one year old. For determination of sugars are followed the procedures and established techniques with results semiquantitative type; the samples were analyzed in the Laboratory of the Center for Diagnosis of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The 53 % of the investigates belonged to the female sex and 47% to the male sex. The ages of the children were between 0 and 12 months, with a predominance of 0-3 months. The results were related to the variables of age, sex, weight, height, duration of the diarrhea and pH, for the statistical analysis there was in use the SPSS 15.0 program. The prevalence of reducing sugars in the diarrheal samples is 27.8 % and sugars do not reducing is 27 %. The relate age with the presence of reducing sugars, prevails among 0-3 months the 44.7 % (p= 0.008 ) and not reducing the 40.4 % (p= 0.057 ). The reducing sugars positive are 31.5 % for males and 24.6 % for females (p= 0.677 ). Not reducing sugars positive are found in 27.8 % for males and 26.2 % for females (p= 0.852 ). There is a direct relationship between reducing sugars and weight; the 54.5 % has between 0.1 -3,0kg (p= 0.019 ) and not reducing 45.5 % (p= 0.116 ). In the same way the relate height with the presence of reducing sugars, 48.8 % were between 45-54 cm (p= 0.002 ) and not reducing 41.5 % (p= 0.036 ). There is no significant relationship between duration of diarrheal with the presence of reducing sugars (p= 0.299 ) and not reducing (p= 0.652 ). Nor is there a significant relationship between pH and the presence of reducing sugars (p= 0.963 ) and not reducing (p= 0.901 ). Key Words decs: Sugars, lactose intolerance, pH, infantile diarrheal, infants, a health center.
