Intraabdominal heterotopic ossification: Case report

Abstract:

Bone tissue formation (ossification) in unusual sites (heterotopic) is infrequently within the abdomen. Multiple surgical inter-ventions and abdominal trauma are the main associated factors; however, its etiology is still unknown. We present the case of a 56-year-old male patient who, after a motorcycle traffic accident, presented multiple trauma with blunt abdominal trauma and injuries to solid and hollow viscera, he was underwent surgery on several occasions, initially for the repairs of his traumatic injuries and later due to additional complications. The CT scans performed 13 months after the trauma showed intraab-dominal bone formations located in the mesentery, the omentum and the abdominal wall extending to the xiphoid, concordant with intraabdominal heterotopic ossification processes.
