Introduction to forest monitoring using advanced remote sensing technology - an editorial message

Abstract:

Remote sensing (RS) has a wide range of applications in forest monitoring at local, regional as well as global scale in all ecosystems on Earth. Forest monitoring is the foremost requirement for the assessment of forest parameters and related research work. Forest monitoring includes traditional field survey as well as advanced earth observation with space-borne, airborne, drone-based, or terrestrial mounted sensors or scanners. This chapter deals with the advancement in RS technology for forest monitoring established through original research work and case studies. RS technology can identify, detect, discriminate, classify, evaluate, and measure several forest parameters in two ways; qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. Estimation of forest parameters with RS technology generally employs correlation with spectral indices and modeling. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
