Abstract:
Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has evolved into one of the most important, handicapping and expensive diseases in the last 50 years, affecting not only First and Third World countries but also creeping into the Pediatric population, creating an urgent need to develop new treatments and plan new approaches to undermine organ damage, especially in the younger patients. In this issue, several articles concerning different aspects of this health problem are published. Lechin et al present an elegant essay on Insulin versus Glucagon crosstalk, which dwells with the autonomous nervous system and its influence in peripheral mechanisms of metabolic control. 1 The main aspect of this article is that dopamine is associated with hypoglycemic states, whereas serotonin is related to hyperglycemic and uncoupling stress states.
