Is Delayed Papillary Thyroid Cancer Surgery Associated with Higher Mortality Risk?
Abstract:
Background Timely surgery after diagnosis is a crucial factor in reducing the progression of some type of cancers, as delayed surgery is associated with a high mortality risk in breast and colon cancers (1, 2). Nevertheless, the impact of the timing of surgery on survival in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) remains unclear. This study evaluated the association between time to surgery and overall survival in patients with PTC (3). Methods The US National Cancer Database was used to perform this study. Patients were included if they underwent total thyroidectomy for nonmetastatic PTC between 2004 and 2016. Patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (mPTC) were also included but were analyzed separately.
