Is Integration Possible with (in) Security? Venezuela-Ecuador and Colombia (2007-2012)


Abstract:

The objective of this article is to examine how Venezuela and Ecuador have built their international relations with Colombia in terms of security, together as well as separately, during the governments of Hugo Chavez and Rafael Correa, from 2007 to 2012. The study tries to identify differences and similarities between the actions carried out by each Bolivarian government toward Colombia. First, the countries are identified as players in the international environment in terms of their actions, voice and ability to influence. Later, the influence of idiosyncratic and systemic variables on the construction of external relations based on contributions made by Hey (2003) will be explained. Finally, the study approaches topics related to attempts for bilateral reconstruction among the three countries after the attack carried out by the Colombian Armed Forces in Ecuadorian territory (Angostura).
