Is human cloning a scientific success?
Abstract:
The idea of designing and creating human life is one of the most important hopes of human beings since the beginnings of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. At the end of 90s Roslyn Institute of Edinburg cloned a famous sheep, Dolly, using somatic cells of the mammary gland. This fact gave rise to madness in the scientific community trying to clone any organism, including human. This article presents some reflections about biological, social and legal implications of human cloning. Biological evidences suggest that this technique is still little known and unsafe. Some investigations demonstrate its low probability of success. The utilitarian creation of human beings change the nature of human life: from an end into a means. On the other hand, human cloning twists the real objective of science, creating a new problem in society: discrimination. International laws must find an equilibrium between development of scientific advances for the benefit of mankind and eliminate abusive situation against human dignity and human rights.
