Island feminism meets feminist geopolitics: The spatial dynamics of gender-based violence in the Galapagos Islands

Abstract:

This paper brings together reflections on island feminism with feminist geopolitics in the Latin American context. Based on ongoing qualitative research by two Ecuadorian feminist geographers, gender-based violence spatial dynamics on one of the islands of the Galapagos archipelago – San Cristobal – is analysed. A multi-scalar approach from the experience of Galapagueña and foreign women highlights that gender-based violence is spatially determined in ways that challenge the public–private sphere in the island space.
