Ivermectin: The success of a drug in the treatment of tropical diseases
Abstract:
Infectious diseases are a major cause of mortality and morbidity globally. These indicators are higher in less developed countries, where tropical diseases are more frequent. Ivermectin, an effective drug against Oncosarcosis and lymphatic filariasis, among others, emerged from a unique international collaboration between the public and private sectors; it has become the basis of one of the most successful public health programs of the modern era and one of the most successful therapeutic drugs in veterinary medicine. Its development process also incorporated the world's first and largest drug donation program and involved a unique partnership between governments, non-governmental organizations, and industry. The drug is now used, free of charge, in two global disease elimination programs that are benefiting millions of the world's poorest people.
