Keratoacanthoma of the tongue, a very unusual histopathology diagnosis with immunohistochemical analysis: A case report

Abstract:

Keratoacanthoma of the tongue is an extremely rare, benign, and self-limiting epithelial proliferation of controversial histogenesis with clinical and histopathological characteristics similar to squamous cell carcinoma, though with different biological behavior, representing a diagnostic challenge for the pathologist. We present the case of a 72-year-old male with a fast-growing (3 months) exophytic crateriform lesion on the right lateral border of his tongue that was histopathologically diagnosed as keratoacanthoma. We did an immunohistochemical evaluation for the expression of various antibodies (p53, E-cadherin, Bcl-2, Ki-67, cyclin D1, and cyclooxygenase-2) to evaluate their behavior in this case.
