Kichwas Otavalo crafts and tourism


Abstract:

This research aims to analyze how the traditional process has influenced the tourist development of the Kichwa Nationality of Otavalo in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. A literature review, document analysis and statistical sources allowed a closer look to the particularities and the contribution of handicraft production for tourism, inm particular the cultural factors that make the Otavalos-Kichwa to gain economic influence through the success of their crafts, trade analysis, investment in equipment, communication technology, infrastructure and tourism, which has caused changes in the life conditions of this population. It is concluded that the Otavalos have created production and marketing schemes according to the demands of the new market, making handicrafts allowed to enter in the dynamics of a global market.
