Knowledge about palliative care in nursing professionals in primary health care


Abstract:

Introduction: Palliative care improves the quality of life of the population in their different life cycles, of patients with potentially fatal diseases. Primary care being the main gateway for the detection of patients who require palliative care. Objective: To determine the knowledge about palliative care of the nursing personnel that work in Primary Health Care in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. Methodology: A quantitative approach study with a descriptive scope and a non-experimental cross-sectional cohort design. A validated instrument was used through the criteria of experts and a reliability of the scale with a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.701. The questionnaire consists of 9 sociodemographic questions and 20 questions based on the theory of the quiet end of life by Cornelia Ruland and Shirley Moore. The sample was made up of 147 nursing professionals who work in the health districts 01D01 and 01D02 of the city of Cuenca, for the analysis of the results the SPSS version 15 program was used. Results: The level of knowledge of the nursing professionals in primary care on palliative care it is average with 43.5%. Conclusions: It was determined that the level of knowledge for each dimension is similar in both districts, that is, the health professionals who work in primary care have equal knowledge between the five dimensions evaluated.
