Knowledge of self-care and alarm signs in ecuadorian pregnant women


Abstract:

Introduction: Pregnancy is a stage that involves various physical, psychological and social changes, in which adequate knowledge must be acquired on safe self-care practices and information on warning signs that may occur in pregnancy. Objective: To establish the level of knowledge of selfcare and warning signs in pregnant women, from the urban and rural population of the province of Cañar, Ecuador. Materials and methods: Quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive cross-sectional research applied to 171 pregnant women who attended prenatal care at the Cañar and Suscal Health Centers belonging to the Urban and Rural area of the Cañar province. The instruments applied were two questionnaires on self-care knowledge and warning signs in pregnant women. The tabulation and determination of the results were carried out using the SPSS 15 statistical program, which were presented in tables of frequencies and percentages, in addition to cross tables. Results: The participants obtained a medium level of self-care knowledge with 60.8% and alarm signs with 38% corresponding to the urban and rural areas of the province of Cañar. Conclusions: The level of knowledge that the pregnant women in urban and rural areas had was a moderate knowledge regarding preventive measures, food, hydra tion, physical activity, clothing, sexuality and social interaction and alarm signs.
