LA DIVERSIFICACIÓN RELACIONADA DE LA PRODUCCIÓN DEL COCO EN RIOCHICO–ECUADOR THE RELATED DIVERSIFICATION OF THE COCONUT PRODUCTION IN RIOCHICO–ECUADOR
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to identify the related diversification of coconut production and its contribution to the capacity of innovation and entrepreneurship of men and women dedicated to this productive activity. The methodology used included a workshop held with 67 producers from the rural parish of Rio Chico in the Portoviejo canton, Manabí, Ecuador; of which information were obtained from 20, including farmers, producers, traders and small entrepreneurs; they were given a survey and a structured interview. The results obtained show the reality in terms of hectares cultivated and their yield, which served to make an analysis regarding the high production of coconut in the sector. It concluded that the production shows a high yield, but not a diversification that allows the producer to generate employment, risk management, alleviation of poverty, and the access to new markets, which would help farmers to develop economic activities sustainable and competitive, which will allow them to raise their level of welfare in this sector of Ecuadorian geography. Among the main strengths are the experience of the producers, the quality of the coconut, good environmental conditions and optimal relations with local authorities, however, there are strong weaknesses such as low associative marketing, market disorder, deteriorated roads and high requirements for bank loans.
