Análisis de la asociación entre el riesgo de desarrollar enfermedad cardiovascular y la etnia hispana en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica durante el 2013

Abstract:

Approximately 86 million U.S. adults have more than one type of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and therefore carry a great social and financial burden. In 2013, the prevalence of coronary artery disease and stroke in Hispanics (mainly Mexican American) was 4.9% and 2.4% respectively. Although the leading cause of death among Hispanics living in the US is CVD, the association between Hispanic ethnicity and CVD has been scarcely explored. OBJECTIVE To examine the association between Hispanic ethnicity and the risk of having CVD in U.S. Hispanic adults. METHODS A secondary data analysis of the information obtained from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) was carried out to study the association between ethnic origin (Hispanics: Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban or Spanish origin vs. non-Hispanics) and CVD (acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease-angina or stroke) in BRFSS respondents greater equal18 years old. We utilized logistic regression to obtain unadjusted and adjusted models to assess the effect of selected population characteristics (sex, age, education, income, healthcare access, exercise, body mass index (BMI), current smoking and heavy drinking status, diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia) on participants who reported having or not having CVD.
