LECTO: A Smart Assistant for People with Visual Impairment for Reading Texts in Spanish

Abstract:

This article presents the design and construction of a text reading device for people with visual impairment. The ring-shaped device created adapts to the user’s index finger. It is equipped with a matrix web camera that captures images from which the text is obtained and reproduces it in audio form. The device is capable of reading texts in Spanish with minimal requirements. The structure contains the functional elements of the device on a flexible plastic support. The control algorithm was developed in Python programming environment using the OpenCV machine vision library, Tesseract as the engine for optical character recognition and Espeak as TTS linked to Mbrola for audio reproduction. The results obtained in the functional tests confirm the effectiveness of the device under certain conditions of use.
