LYNX® 200: An advanced Ziegler-Natta type catalyst for polyethylene production

Abstract:

LYNX® 200 is an advanced Ziegler-Natta type catalyst that is designed to polymerize α-olefins to produce high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and potentially other kinds of polyolefins. The new catalyst, initially named INPETUS®, was developed by PDVSA-Intevep and scaled up by Engelhard Corp., and has been tested in commercial-scale units in several plants in Venezuela and other countries. Recently, PDVSA-Intevep granted an exclusive license to Engelhard Corp. for the manufacture and worldwide commercialization of this technology. This article discusses the main performance advantages of the LYNX® 200 catalyst in comparison with conventional Ziegler-Natta polymerization catalysts, and summarizes the developmental history and present commercial status of this technology.
