Abstract:

A non-fiction book, compelling enough to warrant a cover-to-cover reading in one sitting, is a rare find indeed-and this is the case with Franco Palmieri's book. We recommend Palmieri's book to students and to all those of the reading public who feel involved in the search for Jewish identity by means of its cultural history. The term," culture", which appears in the subtitle ('Jewish Culture from Yiddish to Ameryiddish') is a more precise definition of the vast scope of this book and its" raison d'être" which is not limited merely to literary or linguistic investigation but, true to our times, crosses over into the fields of history and sociology. Palmieri thus presents the reader with a multi-dimensional portrait, a wide-ranging" interdepartmental" study of the philosophical, religious and literary traditions of diaspora Judaism from the" Mishnah years" to the epoc of assimilation, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the East …
