La arquitectura religiosa en el Quito moderno, el caso del padre Pedro Brüning
Abstract:
During the 20th century, the Catholic Church was going through a different cultural and political context that it was not accustomed to, which caused them to search for ways to adapt to the new conditions of society, and thus renew itself. It is in this context that new religious congregations arrived in Ecuador that were part of the Renovated Church with the aim of taking over the different labors of society. Of the religious newcomers that arrived to the country, there stood out the german architects John Baptist Stiehle (1829-1899), redemptorist and father Peter Brüning (1869-1938), lazarist. They were the ones to take charge of materializing the reformed church in ecuadorian architecture during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The purpose of this investigation is to make evident the contributions of father Peter Brüning in the religious architecture of the country, but, above all in Quito during the beginning of the 20th century. For this, an architectural-historical investigation was incurred where diverse bibliography was revised with the aim of achieving a broadening, systemazation and analysis of data about his works and collaborators; with a unique emphasis on the parochial church of San Roque. Developing a formal, functional and constructive system analysis: showing the changes of the parochial ensemble and of the church throughout the years, together with its pictorial richness and design. In this way, it is made evident of the large influence that father Brüning had on the constructions of religious nature in the city of Quito, besides of his contributions to ecuadorian plastic arts
