A COMPARISON OF FELODIPINE AND HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE AS AN ADDITION TO BETA-BLOCKERS IN THE TREATMENT OF HYPERTENSION-A SPANISH MULTICENTER TRIAL
Abstract:
The aims of the study were to compare the efficacy and tolerability of felodipine (5-10mg b.i.d.) and hydrochlorothiazide (25-50mg once daily) as additional therapy for patients with essential hypertension (rated as WHO Stage I-III), which was not controlled by beta-blocker monotherapy (i.e. DBP greater-than-or-equal-to 95mmHg) or by beta-blocker + diuretic or vasodilator (i.e. 95 greater-than-or-equal-to DBP greater-than-or-equal-to 105mmHg). Following a run-in period on beta-blocker plus placebo for 2-4 weeks (two weeks if DBP was above 110mmHg at week 2), 88 patients were randomised, 44 to receive felodipine 5mg b.i.d. and 44 to receive hydrochlorothiazide 25mg once daily in the morning (o.m.) continuously for eight weeks (although the dose was doubled after four weeks if DBP remained greater-than-or-equal-to 95mmHg). After four weeks, 63% of felodipine patients were controlled (mean DBP 91 …
