La llegada del tren a Cuenca: etnografía e historia

Abstract:

The train was built as a symbol of modernity and unity of the Ecuadorian nation. Its construction started in the XIX century and ended on March 6th, 1965 with its arrival in Cuenca city. Some geographical, political, economic, and social difficulties were faced for almost 100 years of construction of the railroad. Lastly, the railroad became a reality and made possible all Ecuadorian people’s desires. However, the southern zone had to wait for the coming of the railroad more than a half century. This study presents an analysis of the events leading up to the construction of the railroad in the southern part as well as the situations that emerged during its development, crisis, and desperation. The content of this work is based on bibliographical sources and oral testimonies.
