A Comparison Of Typical Backup Systems and Ad Hoc Microgrids Powered by Renewable Energy for Improving the Resilience of Local Hospital Loads: Resilience in Microgrids


Abstract:

Natural disasters (ND) and extreme weather events lead to cause damage to the electric power system and power outages for critical loads (CL). As the resulting enhancement of the resilience of the electrical power system during these extreme events is required and microgrid will be considered the best solution to increase the resiliency of the electric power system. In this paper, we proposed two different energy system scenarios for increasing the resiliency of the electric power system during random outages. The first scenario is a diesel generator (DG) with a utility electric grid (UEG) and local electric load (ELL), and DG will provide electricity supply during grid outages to critical loads. The second scenario is a grid-connected Ad-hoc microgrid (MG) including a photovoltaic (PV) system, battery energy storage (BES) system, and local electric loads.
