A Comparison of Electrical and Seismic Anisotropy Across the Southern African Region
Abstract:
The southern African magnetotelluric experiment (SAMTEX) is the largest land-based magnetotelluric (MT) experiment yet performed and provides us with an unparalleled opportunity to compare the electrical and seismic properties of a large region, in this case with seismic properties obtained from the previously conducted Southern African Seismic Experiment (SASE), along with the fine geochemical and petrological information. The depth information inherent in the MT method can be used to place bounds on the depth of the seismic anisotropy, which has no inherent depth information, thereby making a very complimentary study. The MT data were analysed using an impedance tensor decomposition method, which provides us with an indication of the geoelectric directionality, dimensionality and electrical anisotropy properties of the region. Each site was analysed twice, once for a decade of data representative …
