Lack of correlation of body composition with onset of menarche in Ecuadorian girls

Abstract:

The attainment of critical body mass and fat content has been considered necessary for menarche. To assess this hypothesis, we compared body composition using dual photon absorptiometry in premenarchial and menarchial Ecuadorian girls of similar age, weight, and height. Despite variations in sexual development and significant differences in serum estradiol levels, total body fat and fat to lean ratio did not differ between the groups. These data indicate that factors other than reaching a threshold level of relative body fat are critical in regulating the onset of menses.
