Large core Polymer Optical Fibers for aeromobile cabling: 100MBPS and 1GBPS transmission

Abstract:

1mm core Step-Index Polymer Optical Fibers (POF) are an interesting medium for harsh environments installation, since they couple the intrinsic properties of optical communications, in particular immunity from electromagnetic interference, with ease of installation and mechanical resilience. Their current major market is due to the automotive sector, where they are widely employed for the entertainment systems adopting the Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) networking protocol, but they are gaining more and more interest for what concerns home and office networking. However, their very light weight suggests POF could be of great interest in the avionics field. © 2009 IEEE.
