Abstract:
The unemployment phenomenon negatively influences and conditions the economy and the development of the country. The persistence of unemployment over time is the central problem of various economies worldwide and Ecuador is no exception. That is why the main objective of the research is to analyze the evolution of unemployment rates in Ecuador, period 2017-2021. For this reason, it has been taken into consideration to analyze the behavior of unemployment at the national level. Unemployment is one of the most used indicators to know how optimal the economic functioning of a country is, therefore, it was developed through a mixed approach based on empirical review and covered by the collection of data acquired from entities such as the National Institute Statistics and Census and the Central Bank of Ecuador. For the improvement of the work, a statistical study was elaborated in which the null hypothesis was accepted that there is no correlation between the variables unemployment and Gross Domestic Product, it was concluded that the postulate of Okun's law theory is not fulfilled, that the greater the increase of the variations in unemployment there is a decrease in GDP for the Ecuadorian case during the period. In turn, through the results obtained, mechanisms have been recommended that seek coherence and complementarity of public policies in order to stimulate the country's economic activity and thus increase the level of employment
