Late Pleistocene gomphotheres (Proboscidea) from the Arroyo Tapalqué locality (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and their taxonomic and biogeographic implication
Abstract:
We analyse and describe a complete skull of Stegomastodon platensis from Tapalqué (Pampean region). These fossil remains were recovered from a fluvial deposit known as the Luján Formation, dated between 21,400 ± 450 and 18,280 ± 220 years BP (late Pleistocene). We discuss different morphological characters in the South American Gomphotheriidae family, describe its migration routes from the North, and examine the palaeobiogeographical implications.
