Leishmaniasis research in Ecuador, 1920-1989

Abstract:

The current state of knowledge on leishmaniasis in Ecuador is briefly reviewed: the disease is endemic in 14 of the country's 20 departments. Current knowledge about the vectors and the host reservoirs is also examined. Some of the strains from wild animals have been identified as Leishmania amazonensis, and others, isolated from humans, as Leishmania panamensis. -from English summary
