Leishmanicidal activity of ishpingo and moringa plants
Abstract:
Leishmaniasis is a tropical neglected disease that requires urgently new potential molecules as chemotherapeutics agents. Medicinal and edible plants used traditionally are a good source of new natural products for different ills. Ocotea quixos (Lam.) Kosterm (Lauraceae) and Moringa oleífera Lam.(Moringaceae) are two common medicinal an edible plants with antibacterial, antifungal and antiprotozoal activities. In this research, we have investigated the leishmanicidal and cytotoxic activities of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of O. quixos (OQEX) and M. oleifera (MOAX & MOEX). The MOEX extract showed more than 80% growth inhibition on L. mexicana promastigotes and an IC 50 of 7.8 µg/mL (95% CI 0.8873-44.59). However, the IC 50 for the RAW macrophages was 12.95 µg/mL (95% CI 7.255-23.95) and the selectivity index was 1.6. Further purification and testing of MOEX could show leishmanicidal compounds with less cytotoxicity.
