Lenguajes comunicativos en el matrimonio Kichwa Otavalo

Abstract:

In this work I present a sociosemiotic analysis of the matrimonio kichwa of Otavalo (Otavalan marriage). I want to show how in this event culture, moral economy, normative universes and the interculturality are articulated to make collective sense in the community, and how these communicative interactions are performed in the context of the marriage rituals. It is to say, looking at this event not only as a cultural event but more importantly as a communicative event. My analysis is based on the assumption that the rituals of wedding accomplish a fundamental culturally communicative function. To do it, firstly, I reconstruct and describe the marriage event, looking at it as process in which intervene altogether characters, ritual performances, and a set of symbolic objects within specific time spaces. Secondly, from a wider perspective, I examine the marriage in the socio-historic context in order to visualize the cultural continuities and discontinuities and the ways how the senses of individual and collective identities are constructed.
